Someone asked for a process / tutorial post.. The truth is I am always looking for ways to work faster so the process and the style always changes. I went a little bit crazy over the past month because I had the time so I played around a lot.. This one is not fast at all so I am regretting a bit.. But it works for this project.
1. finished (clean up painting on topmost layer, mostly with a small opaque brush)
2. sketch layer - drawn first in a single colour, when done tick opacity lock and slop in colours
3. painting - two new layers - inks and messy colours - I switch between the two, it’s sometimes more fun to ink after blocking out the shapes.
You will always end up working towards your own process that suits you the best, but I think it’s always cool to see how someone else works, hope this was fun. And I nearly forgot to say thanks to GD and TOP for the hair colour inspirations haha

The love story of a marine biologist and a businessperson*. In the end it was easier to just upload everything to photobucket and post on LJ, haha. Sorry it is greyscale. I meant to make this for our Basara fanbook but it became too awkward and semi personal so I am making a completely nonpersonal Hisahide one for CF instead. Speaking of which I should get back to work on that..

Pages 1-4 of a story not really about tea (tea culture was important during the Sengoku period, not so much in the Three Kingdoms so I guess Guo Jia just picked it up from some Tang officer passing through)
Despite the tags this is actually a serious comic, aside from food and games I do think a lot about death and life and the meanings of both. I spend a lot of time doing things alone (by choice and not) and this used to be dangerous when I got stuck at ‘in the long run all our efforts are absolutely futile’. (I tried to write more about how I got out of that loop but it got long and I have to work.. Anyway all my feelings wrt accepting the futility/absurdity of life and carrying on will end up in some comic somewhere / have already been much more eloquently expressed by Albert Camus)

A revelation I had the other day - to block light/shadow into the thumbs because it helps so much with composition and getting the reader’s eye to follow the action within each panel and to flow to the next panel. (Messy sketches, bitchy dialogue and tea ceremonies between strategists from warring eras 1400 years and many miles apart are optional)
For wiser words on sequential art here are some great articles wratty linked to on Alex Toth - an interview, a very detailed and precise critique, an article comparing his work before and after he ‘literally tore up his work and re-drew it based on the critique / feedback received’. Jesse Hamm (author of previous article) also wrote a great summary of why Toth drew better comics than any of us do. I particularly like what (Toth) wrote at the end of his critique:
“I hate giving critiques (…) They anger me! And those I critique! Like you! If you’re angry - don’t waste it on me! Be angry with you! You are in your own hands, like clay waiting to be formed - you must always be your own best teacher! (…) Forget all the fandom bullshit and kudos and hype and (…) adulation - and be true to yourself and your long road ahead to the top, or to wherever you want to go - and don’t let ego stop you from learning to do better, best!”
A belated thank you lovers for your kind and generous response (inquiries, purchases and hustling) to the recent book sale! I feel very small. Ahem, so, er. Last year I drew a short story for Shousetsu Bang*Bang (best description I can think of for SSB*B is “the English prose equivalent of Beboy GOLD”, which is a collection of BL one-shot stories, if your eyebrows shot up after this line stop reading here). Many things happened after I submitted it and thus the presence of this story on the internets completely slipped my mind until I saw it again on my dash today, accompanied by kind words from friends and strangers. The sound made by my heart expanding to infinity was almost loud enough to drown my mortified screams.
If you enjoyed the story (and I am glad if you did!) please also think happy thoughts in the direction of minimoonstar and Basara (two names I never thought I would ever mention in the same sentence): the former for constructing the brilliant idea of 25 rooms, and for thinking of and running SSB*B in the first place, and the latter because the whole idea of repeating lives came from thinking too much about Motochika and Motonari. And now you know.

Oh man I can’t log into admin to update the index page it keeps saying untrusted connection?? But anyway. Jiwang* story continues to jiwang*, although this panel is prabably a misleading example. Three and a half more chapters.
*I cannot find an appropriate English word for ‘jiwang’. I guess you could say ‘emo’ but I feel (mistakenly?) that jiwang has elements of baring one’s soul, playing the rusty steel strings on the guitar of life with one’s bleeding heart, etc… I googled around and the best definition I found was this blog entry from which, I quote, “jiwang is jiwang and emo is emo”. So there you go.
I actually drew this for Chinese New Year, but Boris probably feels the same way about Valentine’s too
