Glass Flowers makes its debut! Part 1 of Spera-Comic.com’s ongoing webcomic is now online, featuring art from Volume I’s Hwei. Click the page above to read the full chapter.Glass Flowers follows Pira, Lono, Yonder and Chobo as they head to the Island of the Festival Prince for a much-desired vacation — only to fall into what might be one of their biggest adventures yet! The new webcomic will be serialised weekly in 5-page parts, with each part illustrated by a different artist. It is written by me, features character designs by Afu Chan, Olivier Pichard and the comic artists, and is produced online with the help of Olivier, who also designed the site. GF will switch to a bi-weekly schedule upon the release of Volume II in February from Archaia. Read more about Volume II here.

Josh summoned me back to the kingdom of Spera for a while to draw the first part of the new story arc “Glass Flowers” which you can read at the link above. It’s always fun to play with Pira, Lono and Yonder again, and get some sneak peeks of new character designs (and some old character redesigns) by Afu and Olivier.. and get super excited about future parts because some really amazing artists have signed up and we are all in for a treat!!
Josh mentioned La Pedrera as a style influence for some of the buildings/vessels and this part sort of descended into Gaudi homage madness.. Have fun looking out for a few cameos scattered throughout the market too :’) I wanted to do a LOT more (it doesn’t feel crowded enough) but ran out of time..

That’s right — I’ll be giving away the above copy of Spera: Volume I, signed by Kyla Vanderklugt, Hwei, Emily Carroll, Jordyn F. Bochon, Luke Pearson and me! And you better believe those postcards will be coming with it.
All you have to do to enter is reblog this post once (additional reblogs from the same party disqualifies them). On Monday, June 11th, I’ll be putting all the names into a hat and drawing the winner.
Good luck!

Heads up: Josh is giving away a copy of Spera: Volume 1 lovingly signed by almost everyone who worked on it, accompanied by beautiful Vol1 & Vol2 postcards (they make great bookmarks!), stained with the tears of Yonder’s enemies..!
(I made that last part up, Yonder’s enemies don’t even last long enough to cry in defeat.)

Big news time: Spera: Volume I is coming out this September from the fine folks at Archaia!
The first half of this 176-page hardcover is a remake of the original story, illustrated here by Kyla Vanderklugt, Hwei, Emily Carroll and Olivier Pichard. The second half is a collection of short comics illustrated by Jordyn F. Bochon, Cécile Brun, Luke Pearson, Leela Wagner and Matt Marblo. Cover art is by Afu Chan.
I’m very excited to finally be able to reveal this. The book is just bursting with great art and adventure, and I’m sure fans of those involved will be blown away by their contributions here.
From the site:
“Lono’s life as a princess consisted of sitting, reading, and dreaming—until the day Pira, princess of a neighboring kingdom, arrived with news of a waking nightmare! With the help of Pira’s best friend—a fire spirit in the form of a dog named Yonder—the princesses now find themselves in a race against evil. The goal: Spera, a magical realm of which the princesses had only ever heard the tallest tales. The prize: their very lives!
Written, created, and edited by Josh Tierney, Spera Volume 1 is the first book in an ongoing series of graphic novels illustrated by artists from around the world.”

The first person to make a ‘hot dog’ joke will be fed to Yonder!! No I am kidding, Yonder is a gentleman
In all seriousness, this is great news for a lovely story and while waiting for September everyone should read or reread the original volume I here for a truly mindboggling spectrum of beautiful art and storytelling styles. Among other things I’m very grateful to the original vol.I for introducing me to so many amazing artists; hope it does the same for you!
